Blackpool is one of the UK's traditional seaside holiday spots.
For the first half of the 20th century, Blackpool was perhaps
the single most popular holiday destination for the North of
England, attracting many travelers from Glasgow as well. Families
would travel to Blackpool for week long holidays, often spending
time at the famous Blackpool Pleasure Beach amusement park, at
sightseeing at North, Central and South piers, and Blackpool
Tower (a 518 foot tall copy of France's Eiffel Tower). This began
to change during the 1960's, as air travel became cheaper, and
many holidaymakers chose more exotic (and more temperate) locations
for their holidays.
In the decades since,
Blackpool has adapted to the changing times, developing and promoting
new ways to attract increasingly fickle holiday travelers to
their shores. In many ways, it has become a more attractive destination
to a wider variety of guests, offering diverse entertainment
in many areas of town. Many of Blackpool's night spots are popular
with stag and hen parties, to the dismay of more traditional
establishments. Near the North Station area of the city (inland
from the sea front), a popular gay night-club district has grown
up around establishments like the Flamingo and Mardi Gras clubs,
and the Funny Girls transvestite show club. Gay-only hotels and
guest-houses can also be found in this area.
As a dynamic and forward-thinking city, Blackpool continues
to look for new sources of tourism and revenue, one of which
currently under consideration is the addition of large-scale
casino and gaming businesses, in the tradition of Las Vegas or
Atlantic City. Naturally, this proposal is controversial, but
nonetheless is evidence of Blackpool's continuing efforts to
maintain its position as a top holiday destination through changing
times. In the meantime, summer season continues to welcome variety
shows and other live entertainment to Blackpool, and their annual
Blackpool Illuminations light show extends holiday interest well
into autumn, when other holiday venues are closing their shutters
for the winter.
Reputedly, Blackpool
boasts more hotel rooms than some small European countries, so
finding accommodation any time of year is rarely a problem. In
this regard, Blackpool is a boon to the last-minute holiday planner!
And with the wide variety of night-life and activities available
for most of the year, everyone from families to singles can find
ample entertainment for any weekend or even a week long stay.
