Winter weddings “surge” reported
- 3rd January 2012
Data gathered from UK registry offices has reported a “surge” in the number of winter weddings taking place in Britain.
A report cited by Weddingreason.com confirmed the news, adding that it is mostly price driving more Britons to go for a cooler wedding – with some potentially saving “thousands of pounds”.
In fact, winter weddings account for almost one-third of all ceremonies held in the UK Stag weekends and hen do numbers may also rise as a result, with the chilly weather apparently no barrier for these couples. The editor of ‘Confetti’ magazine, Belinda Hanks, gave her thoughts on the figures on Telegraph.co.uk.
“One of the main factors behind this has been pressure on budgets,” Hanks explained. “With the economy the way it is, couples are realising that if they do for a winter wedding, they can get a much better deal.
“You can shave down your budget by about a quarter if you marry in winter through savings on venue hiring and catering – you’re talking about thousands of pounds.”
The rise in demand for winter weddings has increased by seven per cent over the past two years, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed. It isn’t just cost driving this change though, according to Hanks. She explained that Brits have become so resigned to the fact that summer weddings won’t necessarily bring sunshine, that they have decided just to embrace the colder weather.
“Going for a winter ceremony means people’s expectations are not raised,” Hanks added.
