Brighton is one of England's most famous holiday destinations.
With miles of beautiful beaches, world-renown shopping districts,
and year-round entertainment and cultural events, it's little
wonder why Brighton is one of the top seaside resorts in the
UK. Patients were sent to the then-fishing village of Brighton
by prescription, starting in the 1700s.
Brighton began gaining
popularity as a resort throughout the 1700s. From 1800 to 1900,
Brighton saw an increase in over 110,000 full-time residents,
and when the railway came to Brighton in the mid 1800s, Londoners
began traveling south to Brighton for day trips and short breaks
in increasing numbers.
Today, Brighton offers attractions to appeal to almost everyone,
young and old. Sightseers can visit the Royal Pavilion, a palace
built for the Prince Regent during the 1800s, and the oldest
operating electric railroad: Volk's Electric Railway, running
from Palace Pier (or, Brighton Pier) to Black Rock. Brighton
Pier itself has enough activities to keep anyone busy for a day
trip, with a funfair, arcade halls and numerous restaurants too.
Brighton also boasts a great expanse of beachfront, with bars
and other attractions along the inland side. There are even two
official nudist beach areas on the Brighton-Hove beachfront.
Even if spending the day on the beach isn't your idea of a
fantastic holiday, Brighton has plenty of inland activities and
entertainment for almost anyone's tastes. The annual Brighton
Festival in May brings a plethora of theatre, music and art shows
to the city, along with spectacular pyrotechnic displays and
parades.
The unique Open Houses
event during the festival invites members of the public to tour
the homes of local artists and craftspeople, to see their workshops,
enjoy their artwork and crafts, and possibly buy pieces to enjoy
in their own homes afterward. All year 'round, Brighton also
boasts a lively nightclub scene, along with music venues and
a wide variety of sport and leisure clubs.
If you're traveling to Brighton, it may be advisable to check
the local schedule to see if there are any major events conflicting
with your travel plans. In addition to the festivals and recreational
events, Brighton is host to a large number of business and political
conventions throughout the year. You may wish to visit Brighton
during an event you're interested in, or try to book accommodations
during a quiet week to enjoy the local attractions with minimal
crowds.
