Leeds is another British city, like Manchester and Birmingham,
which grew enourmously during the Industrial Revolution. However,
the city of Leeds was recorded in the Domesday book of 1086,
and was a large agricultural market town during the Middle Ages,
going on to become a key trading city during the Tudor period.
Because of its history as a major trade centre, it was well poised
to take a major role in the Industrial Revolution, and indeed
between the end of the eighteenth century and the mid-nineteenth
Leeds grew from a respectable city of 30,000 to a major urban
centre with a population of more than 150,000.
With the arrival of the
20th century, Leeds began to diversify its economic and cultural
base with the creation of the local universities: University
of Leeds and Leeds Metropolitan University. After WWII, Leeds'
manufacturing base began a long, steady decline, from a manufacturing
base of over half the workforce to only 10% in 2003. During the
1980's the national government invested heavily in revitalising
significant areas of the city, and today Leeds is one of the
UK's major financial and technological centres.
Today, Leeds is a leader in cultural and business activity.
At the hub of major rail networks and national motorways, and
with its own international airport, Leeds brings huge numbers
of visitors to the West Yorkshire region.
Recently named UK's Visitor
City of the Year by The Good Britain Guide, Leeds has entered
the 21st century in top style. Visitors can enjoy a wide variety
of local sporting events, as well as cultural activities such
as museum tours, opera performances and theatre shows. The triennial
Leeds International Piano Competition brings exceptional performance
talent to the city, and the Leeds International Concert Season
rivals similar music programmes found in London. The Leeds International
Film Festival is also the largest of its kind outside England's
capital city.
Visitors somewhat less interested in history or high culture
can instead enjoy one of the premier shopping districts in the
United Kingdom. Nicknamed "The Knightsbridge of the North,"
Leeds' numerous retail markets and shopping districts range from
top-flight national retailers to unique independent boutiques.
And, as mentioned, Leeds is conveniently located at nexus points
for all major national transport systems, so its an excellent
"jumping off point" for travelers wishing to tour the
North of England while staying in a single central location.
