Modern-day Newquay is one of Cornwall's top tourist destinations. With miles of sandy beaches, and some of the best surfing in the UK, it attracts sea-loving visitors from all over the world. While the year-round population of Newquay is relatively small (slightly more than 20,000), during the summer it increases almost five-fold thanks to the influx of seasonal holidaymakers!

Hen weekend NewquayAs with many destinations in Britain though, Newquay has a long history and makes an excellent destination for small groups and families with various interests in holiday activities.

The building housing the Trenninick Tavern is recorded as a house in the Domesday Book, and by the 1400s the settlement became known as Towan Blystra. In the late 15th c., a quay was constructed to protect the anchorage from North East winds, giving the town its current name. Newquay became prominent as a fishing village, known primarily for pilchards (sardines). However, by the early 20th c. the local fishing economy declined, and the holiday/tourism economy began to come to the fore. Today, a handful of local boats still harvest crab and lobster, but there is no remaining local pilchard fishery.

Stag weekend NewquayNewquay hosts a variety of festivals and events throughout the year, including a number of surfing competitions at Fistral Beach, and the annual "Run to the Sun" event in May, which attracts thousands of classic and custom cars to the town. The resort calls itself "The Surfing Capital of Britain," as a nod not only to the Fistral Beach competitions but also the favorable surfing conditions at Towan, Great Western and Tolcarne Beaches, as well as nearby Crantock Bay. There are many surf shops and surf board hire shops in the town, as well as some locally-based surf board manufacturers. For travelers less interested in surfing, the South West Coast Path runs through town as well.

As with any popular holiday destination, it is well-advised to reserve accommodations in Newquay in advance of the popular holiday seasons. With a variety of choices, from the traditional bed and breakfast, to more formal hotel accommodations and holiday caravans, whatever your preferred holiday style Newquay can meet your expectations!
