Nottingham is arguably on of the most internationally-famous locations in England, thanks to the legend of Robin Hood, dating back to the middle ages. While the details of the Robin Hood legend are almost certainly fiction, the city of Nottingham has made the most of their notoriety, with a statue of Robin Hood near the Old Market Square, and the "Tales of Robin Hood" attraction located on Maid Marian Way, as well as the tourist centre at nearby Sherwood Forest. However, there is more to Nottingham than old legends and purpose-built tourist attractions. As one of England's Eight Core Cities, Nottingham is recognized as a major regional capital of the nation, with historic and cultural importance to match.

Hen weekend NottinghamFor pub-goers a tour of the three disputably oldest pubs in Britain includes a stop at Ye Old Trip to Jerusalem Inn, The Bell Inn and Ye Olde Salutation. Each establishment bases its claim on different standards, so it is best to visit all three to be thorough.

Human settlement in Nottingham dates to pre-Roman times, with some of the earliest dwellings apparently being the beginning of the famous Nottingham caves. For many centuries, the Nottingham cave network remained a major residential feature of the settlement, before their eventual abandonment in the 19th century. With the exception of their use as air raid shelters during WWII, the Nottingham caves in modern times have been used primarily as storage cellars, a tourist attraction (particularly the section beneath the Broadmarsh shopping centre), and even an indoor rifle range! Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem Inn, one of three establishments in Nottingham claiming the title of "Oldest Pub in England," is housed partially within the caves below Nottingham castle.

Stag weekend NottinghamUnfortunately for sightseers, much of Nottingham's historic infrastructure has been lost to the ages. The castle was rebuilt in a modern style, and the Old Market Square, while recently refurbished, bears little resemblance to historic illustrations. However, some of Nottingham's historic districts such as the Lace Market, have been preserved, and now house museums and educational attractions about local history.

As with any large city in the UK, Nottingham features a wide variety of accommodation for interested travelers. From small bed and breakfasts to top-end hotels, there is something to suit any visitor. The Greater Nottingham area offers even more options and attractions, encompassing many local towns and villages, from nearby Arnold, Carlton, West Bridgford, Beeston and Stapleford to outlying towns and villages such as Hucknall, Eastwood, Tollerton, Ruddington, Ilkeston and Long Eaton.
