The famed Yorkshire Dales occupy much of North-West Yorkshire,
and encompass some of the most breathtaking scenery and interesting
landmarks in the region. The Yorkshire Dales region was made
famous the world over in James Herriot's well-known book series
(later to become a long-running BBC series), as well as being
featured more recently in the soap-opera Emmerdale. There are
a wide variety of attractions for travelers in the Yorkshire
Dales region, not the least of which is Yorkshire Dales National
Park, located primarily in North Yorkshire, with a small area
overlapping into neighboring Cumbria.
The Yorkshire
Dales National Park covers almost 1800 square kilometers of land,
with 20,000 residents living and working there. There are many
attractions both natural and man made within the park such as
Kisdon Force and Aysgarth Falls (located on the rivers Swale
and Ure, respectively), for lovers of natural scenery, as well
as Cautley Spout waterfall, the highest aboveground waterfall
in England. From the historic village of Clapham, you can start
an ascent of Ingleborough, one of Yorkshire's noted "Three
Peaks" (also including Whernside and Pen-y-ghent). Other
points of note within the park include the market town of Hawes,
who's Creamery is home to Wensleydale cheese, made most recently
famous by beloved "clay-mation" characters Wallace
and Grommit.
Other sights to see in the Yorkshire Dales region include
the breathtaking Skipton Castle, one of the best preserved castles
of its era in all of England, with sections of the structure
dating back to the 11th century. Fresh Radio, the local radio
station for the Yorkshire dales region, broadcasts from a studio
in Skipton.
Beer-lovers
may also be interested in scheduling a tour through Samuel Smiths
brewery and stables, where ales of all types are fermented in
historic open-top "Yorkshire stone square" fermenting
vats, and their cask-conditioned real ale is still delivered
to local pubs via horse-drawn wagons.
As with many of the picturesque rural areas of the UK, you
have a variety of accomodation choices if you're planning an
extended stay in the Yorkshire Dales. While you can certainly
opt for the hotels located along the motorways at the larger
service areas, you'll enjoy more of the local culture and color
by looking into small bed and breakfast accomodations in or near
the local villages. Local pubs often offer such hearty traditional
fare as Yorkshire pudding and roast, ensuring you'll be well
fed during your stay!
